Hotel D Basel - D...lightful !!!!

Dear friends,

Last week, as some of you might have heard, was the week of Art Basel, the biggest fair of contemporary art in the world. Being a huge fan of art, I am attending this fair nearly every year since I’m a kind (well, to be honest, when I was around 4, my parents had to drag me there!).

Getting into the fair in actually quite easy, but the hardest part is to find a place to stay in Basel since all the hotels are always fully booked, and this from the Monday on. For a few years I was staying at my friend Florian’s (yes the one from St-Moritz!!) but they moved out last year.

But, I am happy to say that I probably found my place for the next ten years (At least)! I tried it for the first time Sunday before the fair and went back there last Saturday. On Sunday, I even had the chance to eat a great fondue cooked by my friend Charlotte, Julien’s girlfriend (thanks again to you both, it was a delicious evening). On Saturday, we went with a great group of friends to try a place called “Eoipso”, but more on that later.

The place is called Hotel D and is managed by my friend Julien, who is as well an Alumnus from Lausanne… now I can imagine that you think I am talking about this hotel because my friend is running it. Well, to be honest, there is a little of that (before going there I had to hear about it right?). But that doesn’t diminish the fact that it is a really cool hotel. And I think it is great to see young entrepreneur launching their project and trying to shake things up a little (especially in a city like Basel).

The hotel is a nice 4* design hotel with comfortable rooms, rain like showers (with incrusted lights…awesome!) and all the cool stuff you are often missing in Swiss hotels  as a young cool travelling person (High-speed Wlan, Ipod deck, usb check to connect to the tv, flat screen modern tv, etc.). Some rooms have a little lounge area which can be turned into an extra bed (ask for the 308) and some have a balcony (on the upper floor). There is as well some nice junior suites.

On my first night, I slept like a baby. Although all the big hotel chains are marketing they beds and so, it is still rare to sleep so well out of home. So it had to be mentioned and I had to congratulate Julien about his beds. He told me he actually tried several beds before the opening and that he tested the bed he bought for 3 months in his own apartment to see how they really were (if that is not commitment, what is?)! The staff of the hotel is super friendly (everybody speaks English btw.) and the girl at breakfast even got me an extra tray of salmon (just for myself! oups…sorry I screwed the inventory).

I can only recommend you this hotel if you are going to Basel. It is as suitable for a business trip as for a relaxed couple weekend (remember? Amazing beds!).

The delicious complementary (fair-trade) dark chocolate

Hotel D is not pretending to be what it is not and you will have a great experience at a fair price. If you are planning to go for the Baselworld or for Art Basel, book now! They are already nearly full!

From Zürich with love,

Mr. Nico
