Paper what?!

Dear friends,

I was taking the other day with a friend of mine and she made me realize that one milestone restaurant from Milan was actually missing on my blog: Paper Moon. (By now, all the people that actually know the place are probably saying “ahhh right, he totally forgot Paper Moon”).

You see, for most people, this restaurant is not a discovery. It has been around for a long time, welcomes many tourists and Milan’s finest society for a lunch or a late diner, and is located in the heart of the city, on the via Bagutta, just behind via Montenapoleone.  So let me tell you why I actually go there and why I like the place.

I used to go there quite a lot because it is very convenient. You eat well and it’s right in the city center. On top of that, the crowd is always fun to watch. I actually like going there because I get a table nearly all the time and since I went there a lot, the American tourist stands no chance against me in the line. I have to agree, it is mean, and egocentric, but I really enjoy stealing someone’s table just because I know the restaurant better once in a while. I will just mention for my defense that for a few months when I arrived in Milan, it was my table which always got hijacked from me by some super classy Italian in a nice suite.

But let’s talk a bit more about the food. Paper Moon does pretty decent pizzas, specially the one with the buffala mozzarella (always mention you want it put on your pizza after the cooking). But if you had to order only one, you have to try the white truffle pizza when the season comes. It is delicious and I think everybody will take a very snobbish pleasure to eat white truffle on a pizza.

I normally always order the same dishes I have to say when going there: a pizza to share as a starter, a
grilled veal paillard with veggies and a piece of tiramisu (well, that was before I discovered I was lactose Intolerant)! On the table, I also always manage to order some of their amazing fried potato (they are my friend’s Philippe favorite in Milan, although we both prefer Nuova Arena on a more global scale). Prices are reasonable and they have a decent Chianti Antinori and some Jermann’ famous white wines.

We organized one of Xin Xin’s birthday diners there when the whole group came to Milan last November (cf. article called The Cake) and had a blast.

I strongly recommend this place to you if you are in the center of Milan with a bunch of friends and if you like to eat with the “scene” (and the people from Geneva since they are all addicted to the place).

From Frankfurt with love,

Mr. Nico
