Dear Friends,
Today I want to talk to you about a restaurant called Windows. It is located in the Hotel d’Angleterre in Geneva. It’s not called Windows for nothing, it has a fantastic view over the lake ! I went there a few months ago with my parents. You see I am really lucky because my parents love to eat well (if you were wondering where it came from!). Therefore, they always take me to nice places. It can be a very simple raclette restaurant in the mountains, or some more elaborate cuisine, like the Windows. We went there because we were looking for a place to eat well that changed a little bit from the usual suspects we always go to in Geneva.
Actually, I am a faithful customer of the Hotel D’Angleterre because of its bar, The Leopard Room, which is for me one of the only true hotel bar you can find in Geneva. The head barman, Walter, and his staff are wonderful and I have to say that I always pay them a visit when passing by Geneva (their Hendrick’s fizz and their Singapore sling are killers!).
But I never really paid attention to the restaurant above. It was a big mistake! This restaurant is probably one of Geneva’s best hotel restaurants. We had a wonderful menu which was very inventive (sometimes maybe a little too much but the chef is young so…) and well thought. The 3 different amuse-bouches were delicious. As a starter, my Mom ordered the 3 boiled eggs (topped with salmon, shrimp and caviar), my dad the scallops and I choose the stirred foie gras. We all agreed afterwards that the starters were amazing!
As a main course, I was really happy with my jumbo shrimps wrapped in Bellota ham (I don’t know why, but lately, shrimp wrapped in ham are just my favorite! It’s both crispy and smooth).
My dad ordered the “Lièvre à la royale”. The thing is, my Dad loves “Lièvre à la royale” (LàR), which is a classic from the French gastronomy. He actually ordered it nearly everywhere in the past months (including some top notch restaurants in Paris). And although we had a wonderful meal, the LàR was not matching the overall level of it. So we explained to the staff we were a bit disappointed with it and guess what? They thanked us for our critic, talked to the chef and invited us to come back soon to try a new version of it! This, ladies and Gentleman, is for me the sign of a “grand Restaurant” which accepts criticism and learn from it. Did I mention that the service was great? And you should totally try the dessert! We ordered as usual everything that had chocolate in its ingredient’s list and it was awesome ! And Dad, who ordered a pineappleish dessert with rhum was as well really happy.
I can only recommend this place to you for a nice diner (well with your parents’ cause it’s a bit expensive!), a business lunch (great lunch menu) or even a romantic date with a table overlooking the lake! (Valentine’s Day is approaching, just saying…)
I have to run because I have an aperitivo in 10 minutes !
From Milano with love,
Mr. Nico
