You could think that the concept of slow food, or organic food, are very modern concepts. Well I know now a restaurant in Milan that started to apply these concepts back when it opened, in 1921 !! Masuelli San Marco, located on the viale Umbris, a bit outside Milan's core centre, is serving typical food from the region of Piedmont. The cuisine is very seasonal since all the product that are served, from the vegetables to the beef, as well as the Salumerie (ham, pancetta,etc...), are produced by the owners itself in their farm, not far away from Alba.
I have mention that I discovered this amazing place thanks to my friend Stefano (he should be writing this blog !) ,which alone is a sign of high quality !
When you arrive there, for lunch or diner, you are welcome by the actual owner (3rd generation) who is around 70-80 years old but still has a sharp eye on everything happening.
He will give you a menu, but basically you won't have time to open it since he will start talking to you about all the good dishes his wife and son are preparing in the kitchen. It is a moment which is legendary! And don't even think about saying no to his recommendation, we never saw again the last person who did it.
I strongly recommend to order some ham and pancetta as a starter (piatti de salumi) just to taste. It worth it !
Then choose either the pasta of the day (vegetables ragu, veal,etc...) Or the world famous safran risotto (from pistils, the safran, not powder). In case you choose the ladder, the plate you ate it in will be offer to you as a souvenir !
Then, I would advice you to try a dish that include some fassone beef (italian's response to kobe, wagyu and simmenthal).
As for the dessert, there is a crucial choice to make: either the Crema di Mascarpone (which is basically a tiramisu with nothing but the cream...why bother with biscuit !) Or the 'bonet', a typical chocolate cake from the region of Turin (delicious !)
